What is the best way for me to use BarTaker?Quizzes on BarTaker are categorized by topics. If you are learning a new subject, you can spend 2-4 days going through all the flashcards and quizzes in that subject. Go back to that subject a week later for spaced review. If you are refreshing your memory, you would want to mix up the subjects and take 2-4 quizzes every day for optimal learning. When you start practicing essays, you could take a quiz in the morning and practice your timed essay on that topic a few hours later. As you get closer to the exam, you may want to spend 30 mins each day on a few quizzes refreshing your memory.
I have memorized the law. How can BarTaker help me?BarTaker is perfect for someone who has learned the law but has no way to confirm that. Our flashcards and interactive quizzes help you confirm your knowledge and identify any weak areas that need further review. This ensures that on the day of the bar exam, you're not relying on luck but are fully prepared and confident in your recall.
I have heard that memorization is not required. I should understand the concepts without having to memorize them.Passing the bar exam requires that you know black letter law. For example, the essays require that you explain legal rules clearly and analyze the facts by demonstrating your understanding of the law. The MBE tests your ability to apply legal knowledge to specific scenarios. There is often a debate between verbatim memorization versus having a deep understanding of the law that you can explain in your own words. The bar exam is known for requiring specific keywords and concepts, and success on the bar requires that the applicant is able to identify and explain these terms. BarTaker helps you master these keywords so that you can explain fundamental law on essays in your own words and apply your legal knowledge on MBE questions.
Why are some of the questions on BarTaker easy?BarTaker is a learning tool designed to help you master the fundamental legal concepts tested on the bar exam. Our goal isn't to challenge you with difficult questions right away. Instead, we deliberately start with easier questions to reinforce key concepts, allowing you to absorb the law without feeling overwhelmed. By making the initial questions approachable, we help you learn without the pressure of failure. Research shows that active recall is one of the most effective ways to retain information. We gradually introduce legal concepts, slowly increasing the difficulty and complexity. We often repeat previous material to reinforce your learning in a gentle, manageable way. Our aim is for you to recall legal concepts confidently so that you can pull them from memory on exam day, even under stress. Some introductory questions may seem easy because they cover foundational topics commonly taught in law schools. These are essential building blocks that prepare you for more complex material ahead. We encourage you to complete the entire quiz and focus on areas where you'd like to strengthen your knowledge. Feedback: We value your input and are constantly striving to improve our quizzes. Please share which questions you think could be improved, and let us know which ones helped deepen or challenge your understanding of the law.
Why do some answer explanations have citations, while others do not?The difference arises from the distinction between statutory law and common law. For example, Evidence law is governed by both the Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE) and common law principles. When a question is based on the FRE, we provide citations to those rules in the answer explanations. However, when a question is based on common law principles, such as concepts like spousal immunity or equitable remedies, we do not include citations as these concepts are derived from common law and do not have specific statutory citations.
